SCRATCH ACADEMY - BEGINNER SERIES
In this short episode, I introduce the beginner course and how we are going to learn. There is a lot of free material out there from very generous content creators but it focuses on what to do and not how to learn. My tutorials are different because they draw on research into high performing talent and use deliberate practice techniques that are proven to take people from novice to master in the shortest possible time. I won’t just show you what to do, I will show you how to learn and how the pros vary the techniques to broaden the expression they are able to convey with each technique. You can download scratch samples and a series of beats, including a 'stamina trainer' (that goes from 80-180bpm), from here.
HOW TO LEARN FASTER THAN ANYONE ELSE
This episode of Mr. Big Mouth's Scratch Academy Beginner Series is a must watch. There are 3 key ingredients to going from zero to mastery in the shortest possible time - adopting a growth mindset, grit (passion and perseverance) and deliberate practice. This episode explains each in detail, setting you up for success. A detailed illustration of the end to end deliberate practice process is included, showing you how to target your practice to rapidly improve your results. This guides you through goal setting, identifying issues and taking different practice approaches, depending on the issue (technique, agility or stamina).
HOW TO SET UP YOUR GEAR FOR SCRATCHING
Scratching requires your gear to be set up in a specific way. In this episode from Mr. Big Mouth's Scratch Academy Beginner Series, I go through marking your record, setting the cross fader to cut, cutting the bass if you’re using needles on vinyl, performance pads and the value of slowing down the platter to give you a longer sample to work with.
HOW TO MASTER THE BABY SCRATCH
Mr. Big Mouth's Scratch Academy Beginner Series Episode 4 is about the baby scratch. The baby scratch is the first scratch you should learn. It’s the foundational basis for so many other scratches and a great scratch in its own right, used extensively by most professionals today. First, I’ll take you through what to do to execute the baby scratch. Then I will take you through all the stages of mastery and teach you how to focus your practice to solve any issues you face along the way. And finally, I will show you how the pros vary this technique to get a broader set of sounds from this one simple technique.
